Essence of the Nine Ranks Chart, 24 x 36 in

A reference chart of a Gu Master's essence, from green copper to yellow apricot. Ranks 1 to 5 each show four stage swatches from initial to peak, named as in the novel: green copper (ch 80), red steel (ch 94, 115, 145), white silver (ch 312), yellow gold (ch 331, 345, 358, 424) and purple crystal (ch 379). Short notes add details such as the greenish-blue rank-one sea with its copper luster (ch 6) and the crystal-clear peak of rank five (ch 379).

The immortal ranks are counted in beads, where one immortal essence stone equals one green grape bead (ch 2228). One hundred green grape beads make a red date bead (ch 1202). A white litchi bead equals ten thousand green grape beads (ch 1644). The orange-yellow, apricot-shaped yellow apricot bead is worth a million stones (ch 2215, 2228). The ten-to-one step is marked only between ranks 1, 2 and 3, the only ranks where the novel states it (ch 26). The color names come from the novel; the swatches are artistic renderings of them.
