Spring Autumn Cicada Art Scroll, 24 x 36 in

A tall hanging scroll of the Spring Autumn Cicada, the Rank 6 Gu of rebirth. "In short, it is the ability to be reborn" (ch 1). It is drawn from the novel's description: a craftwork of palm wood and tree leaves, with a brownish-yellow body that has growth rings and a glossy varnish, and two very wide, translucent green leaf-wings that overlap along its back (ch 19). Smoke-like wisps surround it as atmosphere. The River of Time is invisible and colorless in the novel (ch 23), so it is not drawn.

The type block below the art reads RANK SIX · IMMORTAL GU · THE GU OF REBIRTH, with three short notes. The first notes that leaping back five hundred years left the cicada so weak its own master could not sense it (ch 19). The second says it drinks straight from the River of Time to keep its vitality (ch 23). The third says it ranks seventh among the ten great mystical Gu (ch 1). A blood-red seal holds the Blood Sea Co. mark.
